Ulu Lemanak River / Longhouse

Day 1                             Kuching / Ulu Lemanak River / Longhouse (Lunch/Dinner)

Morning, depart Kuching for 4 hours leisure drive to the Lemanak Jetty. There will be three stop-overs along the route, 1) Serian – a predominantly Dayak trading town, 2) Chinese farm house to see how pepper and cocoa are grown and 3) at Lachau for lunch.

The journey passes through scenic countryside of rice fields, rubber, cocoa, pepper and oil palm plantations, which intermingle with luxuriant tropical rainforest, rivers and mountain ranges. Upon arrival at the river jetty, proceed by motorized longboat going upriver against the many rapids, paddling and poling in the clear water of the Lemanak River underneath the cool thick overhanging jungle foliage for about 45 minutes to reach Serubah longhouse and check in at the guesthouse. Proceed to the longhouse for a warm welcome by the natives which comprises of “miring” (Welcoming rituals) and cultural dances. Tour the longhouse, watch the natives at work such as making mats, baskets, handicrafts and mending fishing nets. Join the natives in their daily chores like feeding their livestock, washing clothes, swim in the river or just relax by the riverbank.

After dinner, return to the longhouse for social gathering with “Tuan Rumah” (headman), the longhouse dwellers and presentation of gifts. “Tuak” ( a potent rice wine ) will be served and there will be more cultural performances (where you can partake) before retiring for the night at the guesthouse.

Day 2                          Ulu emanak River / Longhouse (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

After breakfast, witness cockfighting and blowpipe demonstration, followed by a jungle walk to learn about the forest privy, with the guide highlighting the various plants which the natives use for food, making traditional medicine, handicraft and watch how the natives set up ingenious animal traps. The trail also passes through an Iban burial ground. Proceed by longboat further up the Lemanak River negotiating more rapids and tricky bends, fishing, making a few stops to collect jungle produce and lunch in native style at the riverbank. Detour to a tributary of the Lemanak River to arrive at a longhouse, trekking through the jungle for 11/2 hours to arrive at a more traditional longhouse (Kachong), dinner, socialize with the natives and overnight stay at the longhouse.

Day 3                          Ulu Lemanak River / Longhouse (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

After breakfast, depart from the longhouse either by paddling and poling downstream by longboat or trekking to reach the Lemanak River, then by longboat drifting down the river with lunch enroute at the riverbank, visit a school, cross a native suspension bridge and return to the guesthouse, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4                          Ulu Lemanak River / Kuching (Breakfast/Lunch)

 After breakfast, return by longboat to the jetty, then by land transfer to kuching with lunch enroute.

Suggested things to bring :    Dress casually, trekking shoes, swim suit bring along binoculars, insect repellent, torch light and raincoat just in case it rains.
